Soil Health

Two different jobs, one material

North Carolina clay is the background condition for every lawn in the Triangle. It holds nutrients well and water poorly, it compacts under traffic, and in a graded subdivision lot the good topsoil is often simply gone. Top dressing is the long game against that β€” a thin layer of certified compost, repeated over seasons, that gradually improves structure and percolation.

The published benefits are substantial: reduced irrigation requirements and storm water runoff by up to 50%, improved percolation, better nutrient retention and uptake, reduced compaction, and lower pollutant loads in runoff.

Leveling is the other job. When a lawn has ruts, settling or low spots that hold water, straight compost will not hold a grade β€” so we use a 50/50 blend of compost and sand, which levels the way sand does while still feeding the soil the way compost does.

You cannot fertilize your way out of bad soil structure.

Top Dressing & Leveling

What's Included

Certified compost β€” Applied across the turf to improve the structure of North Carolina clay over successive seasons.
50/50 compost and sand β€” Used when leveling is the goal β€” sand levels better than compost on its own, the blend gets the benefit of both.
Pairs with aeration β€” Top dressing after core aeration gets material into the holes rather than only sitting on the surface.
Our process

How we approach it

The right material depends on which problem you are solving.

01 β€” Diagnose

Diagnose

Is the problem soil structure, or is it grade? Compaction and poor percolation point one way, ruts and low spots the other.

02 β€” Aerate first where it helps

Aerate first where it helps

Core aeration before top dressing lets material work into the holes instead of only sitting on the surface.

03 β€” Apply the right blend

Apply the right blend

Certified compost for soil improvement, 50/50 compost and sand where the lawn needs to be levelled.

04 β€” Repeat across seasons

Repeat across seasons

Soil structure does not change in one application. This is a treatment that compounds.

Frequently asked questions

Top Dressing & Leveling FAQs

What is top dressing?
A thin layer of certified compost spread across the turf. It improves soil structure in North Carolina clay over time, and when the goal is leveling we use a 50/50 blend of compost and sand, because sand levels better than compost alone.
What does it actually do?
Published figures for compost top dressing include reducing irrigation requirements by up to 50% and storm water runoff by up to 50%, along with improved percolation, better nutrient retention and uptake, reduced compaction and lower pollutant loads in runoff.
Is this the same as leveling?
Related but not identical. Top dressing is primarily a soil-improvement treatment; leveling is about smoothing out low spots and ruts. The 50/50 compost-and-sand blend is what we use when leveling is the main goal.
