Maintenance

What pruning is actually for

Pruning removes dead and dying branches and stubs, allowing for new growth and promoting the plant’s natural shape and healthy growth, while also deterring pest and animal infestation. It protects people and pets from injury caused by hazardous branches.

Most overgrown foundation plantings in the Triangle got that way the same slow route: nothing for a year or two, then a hard shear that takes off all the new growth and leaves a dense shell with dead wood inside. Regular, lighter pruning avoids that cycle entirely.

We work on an as-needed basis or at regular scheduled intervals, whichever suits the property. Our team is punctual and pays attention to detail.

A good prune is mostly about what you take out, not what you shape.

How we prune

Dead wood first, shape second.

What is dead, what is crossing, what is hazardous, and what the plant’s natural form actually is.

02 — Remove dead and stubs

Remove dead and stubs

The part that drives new growth and takes away the habitat pests want.

03 — Shape for form

Shape for form

Frequently asked questions

Pruning FAQs

How often should shrubs be pruned?
We offer pruning on an as-needed basis or at regularly scheduled intervals. Quarterly pruning is what is built into our full-service plan, which keeps hedges, foundation plantings and bed borders tidy rather than letting them run for a year and then cutting hard.
Why does pruning matter beyond looks?
Pruning removes dead and dying branches and stubs, which allows for new growth, promotes the plant’s natural shape and healthy growth, and deters pest and animal infestation. It also removes hazardous branches that can injure people and pets.
Will you cut my shrubs into boxes?
Only if that is the look you want. Pruning that promotes a plant’s natural shape generally ages better than shearing everything into geometry.
