Lawn care and landscaping for west and southwest Raleigh.
We serve Raleigh from our base in Apex, which in practice means the western and southwestern side of the city is where we work best — close enough that a crew arrives when it said it would rather than after an hour in cross-town traffic.
Raleigh has the widest range of property types in our service area, from established neighbourhoods with eighty-year-old hardwoods to recent infill and new development on the edges. The right plan varies more here than in any other town we work in.
Raleigh’s older residential areas carry substantial mature hardwood canopy. That produces deep shade, significant root competition for water and nutrients, and a heavy leaf load each fall. Turf decisions in those neighbourhoods are shade decisions first — bermuda is not a realistic option under a mature oak, and even tall fescue needs the canopy managed to perform.
Newer development and infill lots bring the familiar Triangle profile: ground graded and compacted during construction, topsoil removed, and a clay subsoil that water struggles to penetrate. The same core aeration and top dressing approach applies here as in the newer subdivisions further west.
Piedmont soils across the Raleigh area are built over Cecil red clay, North Carolina’s state soil. Undisturbed, that profile is deep and well drained; disturbed and compacted, it is the root cause of most of the drainage and thin-turf problems we are called about.
Unlike Cary and Apex, which both run permanent alternate-day irrigation schedules, Raleigh Water operates its own conservation framework. If you are on Raleigh water rather than a neighbouring town’s system, check your current stage before assuming the Cary and Apex odd/even rules apply to your address — they are different utilities with different rules.
For tall fescue — still the most common cool-season lawn across Raleigh — the Piedmont window governs: NC State Extension targets mid-September to early October for fall seeding, with aeration and overseeding on established lawns around September 15th to October 1st, using a blend of tall fescue cultivars.
Mature canopy creates a specific combination: turf that stays wet longer in the morning, less light to recover with, and a heavy autumn leaf drop. Brown patch needs leaves wet 10 to 12 hours to infect, which shaded Raleigh lawns supply more readily than open ones — so irrigation timing and fall cleanup both matter more in these neighbourhoods.
I have hired Mike and his crew to install a brick patio as well as help implement a landscaping plan. Mike is extremely accomodating with regards to your schedule, works efficiently, and is able to provide helpful solutions to any challenges that may arise. Mike and his crew are professional and great at their jobs! I would highly recommend Stone Creek Landscaping to anyone in the triangle area.
Michael and the crew from Stone Creek have been doing my lawn for the last 7 years. Even in the worst of summers in NC, my lawn has continued to look healthy and green. Michael, the owner is responsive and his crew is really great – the best part of my weekly service is the fact that in addition to taking care of the mowing and trimming, they keep up with the weeding – keeping by beds looking great year round.
Michael and his staff do a great job. He redid my yard with a heat tolerant grass and put in some magnolia’s. He always makes sure the work has been done to his and the customers satisfaction when the work has been done by his crew. I had only one issue arise (as will happen any time you do a big job) and Michael took care of the matter swiftly and at no more cost to me. Give ’em a try! Don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
